The interview with artisan Cristina Linzi the glass pearl creator.
HELLO CRISTINA, COULD YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF IN A FEW WORDS?
My name is Cristina Linzi, I was born in Venice in 1974. I live and work in Murano Island where in 2003 I opened my glass pearl workshop and I work with the lume glass production.
WORKING WITH THE MURANO GLASS APPEARS TO BE YOUR PASSION. HOW DID YOU ARRIVE AT THIS KIND OF ART?
Glass has always been a part of my life: my father is a master engraver and since I was a young girl I spent whole afternoons watching him, helping him, and understanding his work. I was always amazed to see, how with a diamond wheel, you could dig a delicate surface like a goblet blown by hand in the furnace, without breaking it. Fascinated by this, I took on engraving courses.
Over the years I felt the need to have something more. I needed to get to know the true essence of the glass, that was my feeling. In October 2002, I had the opportunity to be selected for the first basic course of pearl making with the technique of lume glass working at the School of Glass Abate Zanetti.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB?
The thing that fascinates me about my work is holding a colored glass rod, melting and shaping it, then creating a pearl or a ring combining different colors without the latter coming to mix, feeling of the different densities of the glass. Glass has its own life, a kind of soul, you can shape it, but it must always be respected both as a material and for its temperature that reaches from the liquid medium. It is not easy to explain it, you should try to work with it to understand. The glass must be heard, must be felt. That is why it continues to amaze and fascinate me every day.
